Bud's mother told him that "no matter how bad things look to you, no matter how dark the night, when one door closes, don't worry, because another door opens." What do you think she means by this? How could Bud use this saying to help him now? Have you ever been in a situation where this saying would help you?

  1. I think Bud’s mother meant that even if one of your choices fails or you can’t do it, you’ll always have another choice. there’s always hope Right now it would help if Bud used this saying because he had a choice that didn’t really work out and he needs another choice. He needs hope. I think I have had a situation where I needed some hope and it worked out.

  2. I think Bud’s mother meant you can never do nothing and when something is finished or failed you always go onto another. I think this because it always happens to me when I finish a basketball season I go onto soccer. That is what I think Bud’s mom was trying to say to Bud.

I think that she means that once one thing happens then another thing will happen later so don’t worry if something gets in your way because it is life and life will just keep on going.

Bud could use this saying because even though Herman E. Calloway was mean he might turn out to be his father and things might start looking up.

I think that I have Been in a situation where this would be helpful. I think that when my step-brother, Cal, went to live with his mom and then I wouldn’t be able to see him at home but, Luckily he gets to come over every other weekend and sleep at our house and have fun with us.

  4. I think Bud’s mother means that if something doesn’t work out, there can always be another solution to replace it. Bud could use this saying now to help him because right now, Herman E. Calloway doesn’t really believe that Bud is his son. Bud could use the solution of running away, but I think the only solution that would help Bud right now is to crack the truth out of Mr. Calloway.
I think that I have been in a problem like this, but I believe that I found another solution to the problem.

  5. I think that Bud’s mother meant that Bud should not worry because there is always something to do and somebody in the world to make things better. I think this because I have been in a situation when I felt down in the dumps, and a certain person (ahem, Emily, ahem) made me feel better.

    1. I never thought of this idea. I just thought of how life will move on. I think that this is also a very good way of thinking about Bud's mother's saying.

I think Bud's mom meant that no matter how bad things look and no matter when the night is dark and your scared or when one door closes and you alone don't worry because someone is always there for you even when your alone and scared...

I think this because my dog and cat suffered because they were old and we had to put them down, I was really sad but, I knew that they were always there and they can help me through hard times.

  7. I think Bud’s mother means if something doesn’t work out than other opportunities can come along. Or if there is one thing that doesn’t work than there is more things to choose, you can’t give up! I think this saying could help Bud right now because, if Herman E. Calloway says no or thinks he is not his father than he should keep on going, he might really be his father so he has to try and find out. I have probably had to use this saying before. Many things don’t work out so you can always choose something as good or better!

  8. She could have been saying that if one bad thing happens, another good thing is bound to happen otherwise the karma in the universal system would be corrupted and unbalanced.

Too many good people would have bad things happen to them and to many bad people would have good things happen to them. Bud if the universe is balanced, everything works out!

    1. this is exactly what I think about when something really bad happens to me, A really good thing is going to happen soon after.

  9. I think his mother said this because it means like when one opportunity ends, another opportunity is open to you. I think Bud could use this saying now because he could move on if Herman E. Calloway isn’t his father. I haven’t ever been in a situation like this where a saying would help me.

  10. I think that Bud's mom means when one part of your life is over and another will happen for example Bud´s life in the orphanage is over and now he wants to meet his dad. Bud could use this saying right now by saying that his time Owosso Michigan is over and now it's time to live with his dad in Grand Rapids.I have been in this situation when some of your family leaves and then you have to say well that's over and now I have to say that we have school.

    1. I definitely agree with this statement and I think that Heman E. Calloway is pretty mean to him so I do not think that he is his dad. Do you think Herman E. Calloway is his dad?

  11. I think his mom means when things look bad it always gets better. I think that cause my mom tells me ¨things always get better.¨ So I think shes telling Bud to never give up.

  12. I think mama meant that no matter how bad the day a little light will shine through.I perceive this because once saw a quote almost exactly like mama’s quote.I looked up what it meant It said “no matter how bad the day a little light will shine through.” ~ Fred Rogers. Bud can use this saying now because Herman E. Calloway is rejecting his love.I know this because on page 147 it states” Awww, man.Look ,this child ain’t no kin no mine”This shows rejection.Bud ca use this saying now to keep him steady and trying.I have been in a situation that i could use this saying just recently.I was in a fight over my mom’s attention. And my door closed. But a few days later a new door opened and I had a chance to spend time with my mom.

  13. 1.I think that Bud’s mom meant that he should never give in or give up. Also, she could have meant to give him a message through those words.

2.Bud could use this saying to help him now, because he needs some guidance in order to find his dad and be reunited with his family. Another reason why Bud could use this saying is because he can keep it in his mind as a motivator.

3.I think that i have been in a situation where i could use those words like Bud did in these chapters, I also think that these words could be used in hard times in real life so I believe that I could have used this saying.

  14. I think that Bud's mom meant that when something ends, or doesn't go your way, it feels like a door is closing. Sometimes, this could feel like a setback, or like you're out of options. She says that when one door closes, another opens. I think that when she says "another opens" she means that other opportunities will present themselves. Just because one thing isn't an option anymore doesn't mean that there are no options at all. A time that I remember this happening in the story was when Bud left the Ames' house. His "door" to a foster family closed, but his "door" to being "on the lam" opened.

I think that Bud can use this saying to help him now because it can remind him that he always has other choices, or options. He never has to feel stuck, or hopeless. That's important because he finds himself in lots of challenging situations that might make someone want to give up.

I have been in lots of situations where this saying would have been helpful to me. One that I can think of is that a few years ago, I was training for a running race and I fractured my ankle. I was very disappointed, and sad that I couldn't run for a few months. Instead of giving up, I found another "open door" and as soon as I was able, I started to train using a bike instead of running. This helped me to have a good attitude, and it helped me to continue making progress toward my goal.

What do you think she means by this?

What I think Bud’s mom meant by no matter how bad things look to you, no matter how dark the night, when one door closes, don't worry, because another door opens, is that if one opportunity closes on you or if something doesn’t work out, there will always be other opportunities and choices.

How could Bud use this saying to help him now?

Bud could use this saying to help him now by just giving him comfort in knowing that everything will turn out fine.

Have you ever been in a situation where this saying would help you?

I don’t think that there was necessarily one time that this saying would have helped me, but I do think that this saying is a good one to know no matter what obstacle gets thrown at you. So the answer is that I think this saying would’ve helped me in all tough situations ever thrown at me.

  16. I think what Bud’s mom is saying is, when times are bad and something you don’t like happens, then you get another chance. Bud can use this saying to help him now because Herman E. Calloway can be mean to Bud but he can turn out to be Bud’s dad and things could be looking up. I have been in a situation where this saying would help me and it works.

  17. I think that bud's mom meant for him to never give up on things because when he fails one thing, he can try something else.
Bud could use that saying to help motivate him to always try at everything, even asking if Herman is his dad.
I have been in a situation where this would help is when I change swim teams, it stands for another door

  18. I think Buds mom means that if something is not doing you good another thing will make feel good and will do you good. I think Bud has already used this saying because Bud has had times where its been really bad for him but usually something good happens. I was really sad when my dog died but when we got a new one he made me feel a lot better.

  19. Bud's mother was trying to remind him that there are always options. When one situation seems hopeless, or that you've come to a dead end, perhaps there is a brighter path that you didn't know was there before. This has helped Bud so much, especially on his journey with Lefty Lewis to meet his father. He has to trust himself to make the right choices, be flexible with whatever situation he's in, and ultimately may have to change his course if need be.

Though I have never been in a situation (especially at such a young age!) like Bud, I certainly have had to be flexible and change my direction or plan. It's not easy, especially when you think you're moving along and everything's going right - it's hard to see that maybe changing your plan is ok and that it could lead to something better!
